The central fuller followed by a flattened diamond cross-section of Qara Arming Sword is inspired by the Oakenshott type XVI arming swords that allow for effective cut & thrust practices.

The gently flaring cutting portion of Qara Arming Sword is called Yalman, which is a characteristic of Turkish kilij. Yalman extends for almost half of the blade and adds velocity to the cuts with the true edge, without offsetting the overall weight and profile balance. The sharp false edge on yalman is designed for cutting practices executed with the short edge of an arming sword.

The recurve spine, as an element of various Turkish kilij designs, and double fullers provide rigidity as well as agility to the overall blade structure, ideal for thrusting practices. As a result of its unique design, Qara Arming Sword’s percussion point and forward pivot point are only apart by ~0.5”, allowing for well-balanced and powerful cuts.

Qara Arming Sword’s point of balance, weight, percussion points, and length are comparable to the Type XVI arming sword properties, resulting in a well-balanced sword for on-foot cut & thrust practices. This sword design is compatible with various historical European martial arts styles, such as single arming sword, sword & buckler/dagger, and sword & shield.
